How to become a Medical Cannabis Patient in NY

1. Do I Qualify?

Individuals with the following 13 conditions are eligible for a medical cannabis license under the state program.

  • Cancer

  • Positive status for HIV or AIDS

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Spinal cord damage with intractable spasticity

  • Epilepsy

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis)

  • Neuropathy

  • Huntington's disease

  • Chronic pain

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Any condition for which an opioid could be prescribed

2. How Do I Get My Card?

You must be certified by a registered practitioner; a doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician's assistant that has taken a 4-hour course on cannabis and registered with the state.

You may want to see whether your current health care provider is registered. If he/she is not registered, you have other options.

A convenient option is to get certified online. We partner with NuggMD to provide certifications via telemedicine. The cost is $150.

NYS Department of Health’s Public List of Cannabis Program Practitioners

These lists only cover medical providers that choose to be publicly listed.

It is a good idea to keep a copy of your medical records in order to provide documentation of your condition(s).

Once the practitioner issues you a certification, you must then register with NYS in order to get your NYS medical cannabis card.

3. Registration

The NYS medical cannabis program registration process is entirely online. To register and get your NYS medical cannabis card login to https//my.ny.gov to create an account and complete a Health Application in the Medical Marijuana Management System.

Please refer to this NYS Guide for registering patients and caregivers:

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Choose "Bill Me Later" for the cost of the card/registration.

Once registration is completed, your ID card will arrive in the mail in a few days. You must wait for your NYS medical cannabis card before you can purchase products from a dispensary. While you wait, you are still able to go to dispensaries and contact them if you have questions about their products.

To purchase items at a dispensary you will need two things: (1) your paper recommendation/certification and (2) your NYS medical cannabis card.

4. Dispensary

We keep an updated list of dispensaries in WNY. For information on dispensaries throughout the state please refer to the New York Medical Cannabis Dispensary List.

Some dispensaries prefer that you make an appointment for your first visit, so be sure to call before visiting a new dispensary. All dispensaries in New York are staffed with a registered pharmacist. The pharmacist may be able to help with product selection and ongoing management of therapy.

Caregivers: A designated caregiver is someone who picks up medical cannabis in a patient's stead. This is required for patients under the age of 18 and is commonly used for patients with mobility issues. Caregivers receive a medical cannabis card that designates them as a caregiver. Caregivers must be over the age of 21, reside in NYS, and be designated by the patient on the state's website. More information on designated caregivers is available here

5. Medical Cannabis Products

A great website for information on products available at dispensaries is leafly.com. Currently, MedMen and PharmaCannis update their product menus regularly on this site. The website also allows you to write reviews of dispensaries (like yelp) and publishes the prices of individual products.

All medical cannabis products available at dispensaries are grown and manufactured in NY. The state regulates what products are allowed for manufacture and sale.

Products allowed:

  • Tinctures

  • Powders

  • Capsules

  • Oil for vaporization

  • Topicals

Smokeable dosage forms and edibles are prohibited.

It is important to note that the product you choose can have a significant impact on your treatment with medical cannabis. Talk to the dispensary pharmacist to determine which product(s) are best for you. You may want to try different products to see which one you like best.

We will provide updates on new products in our news section. For more information on products and their costs visit our affiliate GPIMedical.com
